Back 4 Blood (pre-order)

Topping the charts for the first week of August on Steam is the co-op multiplayer zombie shooter Back 4 Blood, which will be released this October 13. Developed by Turtle Rock Studios, who are formed by the original creators of the Left 4 Dead franchise, Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor of sorts for the latter featuring the high-energy and intense first-person shooting action. The game lets you play the regular co-op experience as you complete narrative-driven missions while trying to survive against numerous zombies, or in different versus modes where players have the chance to play as either human survivors or the Ridden.

The Ascent

Also making it to the charts following a very successful release last July 30 is The Ascent, an action shooter RPG developed by Neon Giant and published by Curve Digital. The top-down shooter takes place in a fully-realized cyberpunk world that puts CD Projekt RED’s own Cyberpunk title to shame. Players can either play solo or co-op against hordes of enemies in Veles, a packed cyberpunk world with a distinct narrative. The Ascent supports up to four players at a time, and features RPG elements to customize your character with various cybernetic augmentations meant to help you get a definite edge over your enemies.

Tribes of Midgard

Taking third place on the Steam charts for the first week of August is Tribes of Midgard, another cooperative title with hero tower defense and top-down action elements. It was developed by Norsfell and published by Gearbox Publishing, and can be played by 10 players at a time. Featuring Norse mythology as its central theme, Tribes of Midgard sees players cooperating together to help their entire tribe survive against hordes and waves of enemies. This involves collecting materials and increasing experience as you gain important victories. Surviving longer means more rewards, and those rewards are integral to make it to the game’s end, as players try to hold off Ragnarok itself for the sake of their tribe.

Valve Index VR Kit

Two years after its initial release, the Valve Index continues to be one of the better choices for VR gaming in 2021. The Valve Index VR Kit made it through the Steam charts this first week of August, as PC gamers are still quite keen on VR technology as it continues to evolve and more games for it be released. The Valve Index Vr Kit includes the Valve Index Headset itself, two controllers, and the pair of base stations. Valve also developed and sells VR gaming’s current flagship title, Half-Life Alyx, on the Steam storefront.

Grand Theft Auto V

It’s hard to believe that Rockstar Games’ latest entry to the Grand Theft Auto series is already eight years old; it’s harder still to find it topping the charts after all that time, and yet here we are. Grand Theft Auto V, with both its widely popular single and multiplayer component, makes the Steam chart of best sellers for the first week of August as Rockstar Games continue to heavily support its online aspect. The latest content drop for the online multiplayer part of GTA V is the Los Santos Tuners, and it was released last July 21.

It Takes Two

The always-entertaining Josef Fares’ latest title makes it back to the top of the Steam charts two months after its initial release. It Takes Two, from studio Hazelight and published by Electronic Arts under their Originals branding, was initially released on March 26 to overwhelmingly positive reviews. Like Hazelight’s other title, A Way Out, It Takes Two is a two-player co-op experience that puts its players in the shoes of husband and wife as they try to make their marriage work in an interesting and well-crafted world. Only one person needs to purchase the game, and the other can use a Friend’s Pass to play for free.

New World and New World Deluxe (Pre-Order)

Grounded

Making the top nine of the Steam chart for the first week of August is an early access title, Grounded. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios, Grounded is a survival, base building and crafting game that can be played by up to four players. Its premise is interesting, as the players’ characters find themselves shrunken by unknown means and they have to survive a treacherous backyard garden, a location that would be tame under normal circumstances. On your journey, you’ll face insect life and other dangerous situations as you and your friends try to uncover the meaning behind your situation.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

A six-year old chart-topper for the first week of August on the Steam chart is Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Developed by Treyarch and published by Activision, the 2015 release of the annual COD franchise got a big boost on Steam last week as the game – and most of the series – enjoyed a big discount. The game is still quite popular for multiplayer thanks to its Zombies mode, which has been described as one of the best for the series. It can also be modded quite extensively, as Activision and Treyarch themselves released a modkit for the community to build new maps or challenges for other players to enjoy.
