The methods below will be useful for players whose setup supports the minimum specifications for the game and who don’t have major general issues with their setup. Follow the methods we have prepared below in order to prevent Fallout 76 from crashing further.
What Causes Fallout 76 Crashing?
The list of possible causes is short but it represents the majority of causes players have complained about. The problems are pretty much related to graphics problems:
Solution 1: Limit Your FPS Using the Configuration File
Since the game is not quite demanding for PC users, FPS (frames-per-second) can go up to 1000 considering your GPU’s power. However, that is not necessarily a good thing since it can cause all sorts of problems, including the game’s constant crashing. This often occurs in menus or on the home screen. Follow the methods below in order to edit the Fallout76Prefs.ini file to enable V-Sync which will limit the framerate to your monitor’s refresh rate (usually 60 Hz, 70 Hz or 75 Hz). Note: If you notice no changes to the game, it might be necessary to force V-Sync using the control panel of the graphics card you are using by tweaking the settings related to Fallout76. Follow the steps below (NVIDIA or AMD users).

Note: There are players for which just the opposite worked! This means that they had V-Sync enabled while the crashing occurred and it stopped when they disabled it. This can be done the same enabling it using the methods above. In the Fallout76Prefs.ini file, simply change the “ipresentinterval” line from 1 to 0 or choose the Off option in NVIDIA or AMD tools.
Solution 2: Install an Older Driver
A recent update to your graphics drivers may have caused the game to misbehave. This problem is usually reported to both the graphics card manufacturer and to Bethesda but it may take a while for either of them to patch the problem. In the meantime, it may help you to simply use an older version of the driver in order to fix the problem!
Workaround:
If the methods above haven’t quite worked for you, you can try a workaround until the issue is resolved in later updates and patches. The workaround consists of selecting play from the game’s home screen and using the Alt + Tab key combination in order to go back to Desktop. After you hear the in-game sounds meaning that the game has loaded successfully, click the game’s icon in system tray in order to restore it back in fullscreen. This can be annoying to do each time but it has worked for many players!
