As the Anniversary Update is fairly new, this error is expected to be solved in future builds. However, there are still users who are facing this issue when upgrading from previous builds, and there doesn’t seem to be a pattern as to who and why will get this issue. If you’re one of those users who is struggling with this problem, and you would like to have Microsoft’s latest and greatest, there are a few things that have been reported to work and solve this issue, so you can go ahead and try them to solve this problem for yourself.

Method 1: Disable your antivirus or any other third party firewall program

Security programs in your PC regularly tend to make issues with the updates. Antivirus programs often struggle and get false alarms, and this has been known to happen a lot with Windows 10, since it relies on regular updates to keep it in shape. With most of the popular antivirus solutions, the way to disable the antivirus is by locating it in your taskbar. After you locate your antivirus icon, right-click it. From the dropdown menu, select disable and try updating your operating system now. If you don’t want to disable it, and perhaps don’t want to have this problem in the future, the best thing you can do is make an exception in the antivirus settings so in the future it won’t make any problems. This is usually found in the Settings and Exceptions menu of your antivirus, but some specific applications may have it different. If you can’t find it, make sure to check the website of your antivirus, as there may be instructions on how to do this there.

Method 2: Try updating the PC using a cable

Many times, while downloading via wireless connection, the laptop and in some cases the desktop computer (while using third party antenna or using the internal antenna) the internet will disconnect for a second, and your updates will fail. Wireless connection is not as stable as it is cable connection. We suggest you to switch off your wireless connection and try to run the update again with an Ethernet cable, and see if that works.

Method 3: Unplug all of your connected USB devices except the mouse, monitor (if external) and keyboard

Third party drivers often cause a misunderstanding in the operating system, especially the firewall or any antivirus programs. This may lead to potentially getting in the way of the updates, while downloading them or installing them. This can be caused by mice, keyboards, webcams etc., which all use appropriate drivers that may interfere with the download of your updates. The best thing to do in this case is unplug any devices you don’t really need during the update, and try running it again.
