‘Rivals’

To kick things off, Sucker Punch has announced ‘Rivals,’ a brand-new component for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. This new mode will be released this September 3 on both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5. Rivals will also come with brand-new trophies and cosmetics for players to enjoy. Check out the trailer for Rivals below.

As seen in the trailer, Rivals will see two teams of two players each will compete to defeat waves of enemies. Each defeated foe gives Magatama which in turn can be used to harm the enemy team by way of specific purchases like Shades that block their own purchases and various curses that debilitate your opponents. Once you’ve spent enough of these Magatama, you’ll unlock the Final Stand waves; completing this before the enemy team will win you the game. In addition to Rivals, a Gear Mastery system will also be added to Legends. This is an expansion on the current progression system for the rewards of the multiplayer component. The Gear Mastery system will start applying for players who have earned level 110 gear; this system allows them to bind the specific gear to a class and activate “Mastery Challenges.” Activating this allows the chosen gear’s Ki level to be upgraded to 120m which in turn unlocks a second perk slot. Activating Mastery Challenges unlocks new abilities and techniques for each class. Starting August 20, an update will also be made to the Legends component of Ghost of Tsushima. This update adds new features to Legends, most of them stemming from various feedback with the active community. The Survival mode has been rebalanced to shorten the overall session length and new weekly Survival Nightmare challenge variants will be made available. In addition to all of this, brand-new cosmetics will also be making their way into the game for players who’ve earned them through the single-player component of Jin’s story and the ensuing New Game+.

‘Legends’ standalone

The most welcome piece of news from Sucker Punch’s announcement is their plans for a specific niche of players: what if you want to play the ‘Legends’ component of Ghost of Tsushima without paying for the whole game? For that conundrum, Sucker Punch has you covered with the standalone release of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5. This standalone release costs $19.99 and includes all the content released from its inception in 2020 all the way to the upcoming ones in the future. The only features omitted are the ones that can be acquired from the single-player component of the game. This full-sized release will also allow you to play with the entire player base of Ghost of Tsushima, regardless of whether they only own Legends or the entire game. For players who want to upgrade in the future with the single-player component, Sucker Punch has also made that possible with the Director’s Cut full upgrade for $40.
